About the Artists
Hudson Society of Artists (HSA) is a group of individuals interested in furthering artistic endeavors in the community. Membership is open to artists of all ages and abilities, from professionals to beginners, as well as those who are interested in the arts but do not do any art work themselves.
Pat Barker
Pat has been a member of HSA for 27 years. She is a professional artist and the art teacher at Hudson Montessori School. She was awarded a “Hudsonite of Distinction” award during Hudson’s bicentennial in 1999. She shows at local galleries and at Art on the Green.
Jean Beatty
Jean was born in England and, as early as she can remember, was painting. Coming to America in 1946, she pursued many art forms taking portraiture with Bede Angel in Florida, workshops in Ohio with Lowell Smith and others, and worked for Marc Moon for many years.
Gretchen Bierbaum
Gretchen teaches collage workshops nationally and specializes in altering and transferring images. She has developed 20 different techniques for moving an image from one surface to another.
She is Founder and President of the National Collage Society, and author of Collage in All Dimensions and Creating Collage in All Dimensions, Altering and Transferring Images.
Sharon Borror
As a self-taught artist, Sharon uses transparent watercolor to achieve the atmosphere of her paintings and to evoke a mood or memory. “I strive to capture light as it strikes an object at a particular moment in time, when the subject is most radiant in contrasting values and multicolored, interesting shadows are cast.”
Shannon Casey
After years in advertising, Shannon now tells her stories in oil and charcoal. She teaches small classes and private lessons in her Hudson studio. This show has made her realize that she does like vegetables after all – especially those with faces.
Bernie D’Ettorre
Whether it’s a still life of juicy fruits, a floral up close and personal, or a landscape, the viewer is invited to enjoy the slice of a moment in time. Bernie has exhibited in one woman shows and juried events, winning awards throughout the area. Her work is in corporate centers and private collections in Ohio, California, and England.
Denise Hart Daugherty
Denise has been an artist much of her life, receiving the Scholastic Magazine award in high school and having a full page painting published in “Seventeen Magazine.” Her love of watercolors began when she took a class from Lowell Ellsworth Smith, AWS. Her work has been in many juried shows. She is a past president of HSA.
Pamela Z. Daum
Pamela’s photograph was selected by Women’s Caucus for Art in their Best of 2014 Exhibit, ARC Gallery, Chicago, IL.
She has been awarded a residency at Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, NM, received grants from United Arts of Central Florida, and Capelli d’Angeli Foundation. Her photography is in the permanent collections of Florida Gulf Coast University, Ft Myers; and Orange County, Orlando.
Alice Davis
Alice has been drawing and painting since childhood, developing a passion for watercolor. Her work has been shown in Youngstown, at Robinson Memorial Hospital, and at the Annual East Shore Invitational Art Show in Kirtland. She is a member of HSA, the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center, and teaches watercolor at the Senior Center in Aurora.
Maureen Farley
Maureen is inspired by birds, animals, and the natural world. She has a life-long love of drawing and painting, and is also exploring mixed media and collage to produce free-flowing abstract assemblages.
Barbara Faulkner
Barbara is best known for the gold ornaments of historical buildings which she designs under the name Laura Leighton Designs. She has received numerous awards for her watercolors here and abroad and her work appears in corporate and private collections. Barb was a past President of HSA.
Dana Giel-Ray
Dana specializes in chain maille jewelry using traditional
weaves and creating weaves of her own. Her jewelry is sold in galleries across the country and internationally. She is a past president of HSA.
Gale Haller
A self-taught artist, Gale’s ideas are mostly imagination at work. Her paintings are often florals, evolving from a traditional to a more modern look;they have a definite quality of movement.
Mary Catherine Haneline
Known for painting local landmarks and people, Mary Catherine also offers group instruction for adults and children at her Hudson studio. Her pastel work is featured annually in the Solon and Chagrin Falls Town Planners. Her work is exhibited nationally and in the Cleveland area.
Kathleen Harrington
“In each new painting I draw from my previous works, my education, and a great deal from my personal experience of the natural world. The landscapes of the Midwest, especially the Cuyahoga Valley, inspire much of my work.” Kathleen has exhibited and won awards locally, and in New Zealand and France.
Lori Hess
Lori is an award-winning artist who has participated in fine art shows and taught painting workshops on creativity and color theory as well as privately. Her current focus is on private commissions in children’s portraiture. She is a Signature Member of the Ohio Watercolor Society.
Sally Heston
Sally works in watercolor and drawing media, reflecting her interest in a variety of subject matter. She has shown in numerous group and one-person exhibits and has won many awards. Her work is in private collections locally, nationally, and Europe, as well as in Splash 8: Watercolor Discoveries published by North Light Books. She teaches at Virginia Marti College of Art and Design and Cuyahoga Valley Art Center.
Lucy Karslake
Lucy is a retired teacher and practicing artist. She is known for pen and ink renderings but is proficient in most other two-dimensional media. For 20 years she drew houses from blueprints for Prestige Homes. Lucy is a past president of HSA.
Karen Koch
Karen is inspired by her love of nature and memories of days gone by to create colorful abstract paintings and collages.
Kathie Lentz
A photographer in Hudson for 30 years, Kathie’s studio is in the Acme plaza. Her work has won awards locally and nationally. “Photographs are a way of capturing time and holding it forever in our hearts and minds.”
Maggie McGrainor
Maggie enjoys experimenting with oils and watercolors. She finds inspiration outdoors in nature and landscape. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States, winning numerous awards.
Rhonda Mitchell
Rhonda is a portrait artist but has also been a graphic designer, children’s book illustrator, and author. Her work has been published by Houghton Mifflin, Steck Vaughn, and Scholastic Books. “I regard reading as a lifelong habit of great importance. Influencing children to read and learn more about themselves as well as others, is one of the greatest gifts I have been given.”
Katina Pastis Radwanski
Katina creates colorful acrylic paintings and expressive metal sculptures. Her work reflects her long held interest in seeking understanding of both individual and group behaviors and is predominantly abstract/surreal. It expresses imagery that unfolds in meditative sketching.
Lawrence Walker
After an early start in graphic design and advertising, Larry spent his career as an art teacher in Cuyahoga Falls and Akron. His art has been widely exhibited at museums throughout the region, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and Akron Art Museum. He was recently commissioned to create art for the 2015 First Night Akron and is President of the Akron Society of Artists.
