Janice Lessman-Moss: Artist Talk – Walking & Weaving

November 6 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for an evening of art, conversation, and weaving featuring textile artist Janice Lessman-Moss…

Join us for an intimate and inspiring evening with celebrated textile artist Janice Lessman-Moss, whose work is featured in ITERATIONS: Rhythm & Reason, a group exhibit on view at Peg’s Gallery through January 31, 2025. Presented alongside the work of Peter Christian Johnson and Brinsley Tyrrell, the show explores the interplay of rhythm, repetition, and material intuition across sculpture, ceramics, and textile-based forms.

In this special artist talk and live demonstration, Lessman-Moss will share insights into her creative process, from digital design to handweaving. She’ll reflect on her decades-spanning career and the evolution of her richly textured, light-responsive compositions that integrate shiny wire and intricate woven patterns. Attendees will have the opportunity to touch sample textiles and observe a live demo on a small frame loom, offering a rare, tactile introduction to the artist’s techniques and material sensibilities.

Known for her exploration of rhythmic pattern and the sculptural qualities of woven surfaces, Lessman-Moss’s work bridges contemporary digital aesthetics, centuries-old craft traditions, and embodied practices. Don’t miss this engaging event with an acclaimed artist and educator whose work continues to shape the landscape of American fiber art.

This event is free and open to the public.
Free parking is available on city streets throughout the walkable downtown neighborhood of Hudson, Ohio.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Janice Lessman-Moss maintains a weaving studio in her home in Kent, Ohio, USA where she is Emeritus Professor at Kent State University. She was awarded a United States Artists Fellowship in 2019, the Cleveland Arts Prize Lifetime Achievement Award, the Governor’s Award for the Arts in Ohio, an Arts Midwest/National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Crafts, and nine Individual Artist Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council throughout her career. Her work has been presented throughout the United States and internationally, including a recent solo exhibition at the Kent State University Museum.

In her art, she embraces the unique vocabulary of digital design and its relation to the binary functioning of threads on the loom. Shiny metal wire is integrated into the woven compositions to enhance the richness of textural contrasts and engage the viewer in more active discovery. Traversing the space in front of the weavings reveals a play of light, reflection, and shadow within its low relief sculptural surface. She works with abstract systems in networks of interlocking shapes to create a dynamic topography expressive of her interest in Random Walk theory and the actual practice of walking; rhythmic movement all rooted in a matrix of circles and squares.
